RF

Meet "RF" (pronounced ruff), a 9 year old male Golden Retriever owned by Albert and Caroline Buss of Beaver Dam.  For several years, RF has been developing a common tumor seen in dogs called a "LIPOMA".  Lipomas are a non-cancerous fatty tomor that we find very commonly in middle age to older dogs of many different breeds.  These tumors generally start out very small and they are soft non-painful swellings that arise just under the skin (subcutaneously).  Dogs tend to develop numerous lipomas over time distributed  over the surface of the body.  These tumors are generally harmless, however in some cases they can grow large enough to become disfiguring and cause discomfort depending on their location.
RF has developed numerous lipomas over the past 5 years, but his owners noticed that a very large tumor under his belly has started to cause him difficulty in lying down and resting comfortably.  He also has a large lipoma under his left armpit that is beginning to effect his ability to walk normally.  For these reasons, the Buss's elected surgery to remove RF's tumors to improve his quality of life.

Pre-surgical diagnostic tests indicated that RF was very healthy for his age despite a heart murmur he has had for several years. Chest x-rays indicated that there was no heart failure present prior to surgery.

RF underwent a 2 hour surgery to remove the soccer ball sized mass from his belly.  Extensive suturing was necessary to close the huge defect left behind after removal of the tumor.  Surgery went very well, and RF recovered very quickly after anesthesia and went home that evening..

Surgery is planned to remove  the second very large lump from his armpit area in 1-2 months after complete recovery from removal of the largest tumor that was on his belly.

RF is an awesome patient! The first thing he did when he woke from anesthesia was wag his tail!
