Josey
Meet Josey, a 6-year-old female Golden Retriever, owned by Karen and Donald Baney of Iron Ridge, Wisconsin. The Baney's noticed that Josey was not acting herself for several days. She was drinking large amounts of water and not eating. They became very concerned when these symptoms progressively worsened and she began draining abnormal fluid from under her tail in the area of her reproductive tract. |

The Baney's were familiar with our clinic from our monthly radio show on WXRO radio Beaver Dam, WI. Karen called with her concern about Josey's symptoms and was immediately advised to bring Josey to the clinic for examination because her symptoms suggested a serious infection in her uterus called "pyometra."
Physical exam findings revealed that Josey would need emergency surgery to remove her infected uterus. Pyometra is a condition in dogs that develops when bacteria enter the uterus (usually due to irregular heat cycles in older female dogs) and causes infection. The infection fills the uterus to the point where it can rupture and cause acute death. The infection also releases toxins into the bloodstream of the patient leading to other organ damage throughout the body.
Josey's pre-operative blood tests showed an extremely high white blood cell count indicating that her body was really trying to fight an infection.
Supportive treatment including intravenous fluids and antibiotics were administered prior to surgery to help rehydrate Josey and improve her blood circulation.
Emergency surgery was performed immediately and Dr. Geurts removed Josey's complete reproductive tract which was found to be full of infection and abnormal cystic structures.
Josey recovered very well from surgery and was already eating and feeling much better within 24 hours. After 10 days of antibiotics, Josey returned to the clinic for suture removal and progress check.
Karen and Don happily report she is back to her "old self" and doing well. |
