To no surprise, X-Rays revealed that Chance had a blockage along his intestinal tract that was not allowing any passage of food. He was very dehydrated and weak from vomitting and immediate surgery was necessary to remove the obstruction.
Chance received general anesthetic and Intravenous fluids at a rapid rate to rehydrate him during surgery. Exploratory surgery revealed a large "lump" along his small intestinal tract that extended into some fiber threads about 6 inches down the intestine. The tissues over the obstruction were already turning purple, so Chance didn't have much more time before his intestine would have ruptured. WOW what an interesting conglomeration of stuff was on his recent "TO CHEW" list! There were big chunks of corn cob, along with fiberfill, tennis shoe plastic, shoe laces, and other unidentifiable fibers!. The miscellaneous items were surgically removed from his intestinal tract, and Chance was sutured back together uneventfully.
The following morning he was up and ready to go! A very resilliant dog! And of course, he was ravenous--but was only offered dog food to eat in small amounts. We are so happy to see Chance back to his happy normal self! Our biggest challenge will be keeping him on a healthy diet plan and out of trouble!
