For further evaluation of the eye, we referred Emily to the Ophthalmology specialty service at the UW School of Veterinary Medicine where a complete workup in cluding ocular ultrasound could be performed. Upon completion of that exam, Emily was diagnosed with a tumor inside of her eye that involved the colored part of her eye--the cilliary body. Fortunately there was no evidence of spread of the tumor to other parts of her body and all of her general health screens were normal. The following day, Emily returned to our clinic for complete enucleation surgery (removal of the eye) as the only treatment for the condition. Even though the thought of removing an eye is very unpleasant, Geri knew that Emily's eye had to be removed and would eventually lead to a better quality of life that would be pain free and hopefully cancer free.
Emily did spectacular through surgery and recovered so quickly that she actually went home late that evening following surgery! She was prescribed medications to control pain for the first week after surgery. She was already eating and back to her normal routine within 24 hours, and fully recovered within 4-5 days! What a brave girl!
Surgical tissues were submitted for histology--to determine the type and extent of the tumor present in the eye. Great news! Emily's tumor was completely removed by surgery and her tumor is considered cured! Emily returned to the clinic to have the sutures removed from her surgery, and she is doing AWESOME!!
